Gambling with AI

It has been announced that the UK Betting and Gaming Council (a group representing 90% of the UK betting and gaming market) has launched an AI Anonymous Player Awareness System which will be rolled out to all of its gambling machines.

So what does APAS do? It detects erratic or excessive play and when triggered it suspends play for thirty seconds, displaying messages about safe gambling.

Triggers could be ‘chasing losses’ (or maybe kicking or punching the machine?), playing a succession of games very quickly or spending an excessive amount of time on one machine.

Live behavioural analysis is at the heart of the APAS algo but I can’t help wondering if the gambling industry might use the data to make improvements to their own systems to maintain profitability.
