Google’s AI gap filler

Never before has the Internet groaned under the weight of video calls and we have all experienced poor quality ones. Google to the rescue! Apparently if you use Duo app (and I’ve never heard of it) a program called WaveNetEQ uses a library of speech data to fill in missing portions of speech when the connection gets a bit iffy.

Anyone with alarm bells ringing now can rest easy as Google says it doesn’t listen in to conversations to make the enhancements because the processing is done on the phone itself. However, those of you who have received content specific advertising on their phone following a private conversation held within eves dropping range of their smart phone may be somewhat sceptical.
